the purpose of sound is to stimulate reality and to help heighten the mood and tells us more about the characters present then what just seems to the eye. there are also many different types of sounds, two of the main categories being dietetic and non-diegetic, Sounds which occurs within the world of the film-dialogue, sound effects, songs being played in the scene and Sound which does not occur within the world of film.
there is another main aspect being dialogues, which is a conversation between 2 or more characters and there is also monologue which is simply mono-character speaking to themself or the audience. there are also ambient sounds, Background sounds which are present in a scene or location, this helps determine the mood and tone better.
there is also narration which is also present in digital media texts. it is the voice of a person heard speaking but not seen on camera. it can also be called a voice over. they help provide the background story of the characters. there are SFX that are noise or incidental sounds that add to the believability of an action. there are also foley sounds that are the reproduction of everyday sound effects which are added in post-production to enhance the quality of audio for films.
then there are background score, incidental music and film score, that is technically the same thing but have several names, they are the original music written specifically to accompany a film. then lastly there is Synchronous sound which is a Sound that is matched to certain movements occurring in the scene and then there is Asynchronous sound, which is the previous one's opposite being is not in-sync with the action on the screen and this is done deliberately to enhance the effect.
